Sez- U successfully applied to the Heritage Lottery to fund a major theatre, art and archive project that uses the subject of the Camouflage Directorate in Leamington as its basis.
During the Second World War Leamington Spa was home to 250+ artists, designers and draughtsmen who worked on all aspects of camouflage. They created shadow factories, false buildings, Q and K sites designed to fool bombers into believing whole towns/cities/airfields/marshalling yards existed. They camouflaged factories, coal mines, power stations etc made rivers and canals disappear from the air, designed uniform/clothing/netting camouflage and even flooded the old gallery and museum site in Avenue Road so the Admiralty could experiment with ship camouflage.
This project has two aims one to document, record and archive the work that went on during this time but more importantly it is about using the creative talents that exist now to bring this subject to life and create a series of events, exhibitions and workshops that brings this forgotten piece of Leamington’s history to life and puts it into a modern context.
We are creating a Community Play and make a film that documents this process and final performances/exhibitions etc.
